Sea Shepherd Australia is escorting the Japanese whaling fleet out of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. The ships crossing north of sixty degrees are the Nisshin Maru, Yushin Maru, Yushin Maru No. 2, Shonan Maru No. 2, the Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker. Sea Shepherd has been chasing the Japanese fleet since it arrived in the Southern Ocean on January 28.
Captain Watson believes the fleet managed to kill no more than 75 whales, dramatically below both its target and last year's catch.
"Although Operation Zero Tolerance did not realise zero kills, this campaign will see the lowest take by the Japanese whaling fleet in the entire history of their Antarctic whale hunts," he said.
Sea Shepherd's three ships will continue to follow the whaling fleet to make sure they do not return. Activists have clashed with the fleet five times this season to prevent harpooning and refuelling.
HoodLamb is very thankful for the efforts of Sea Shepherd to protect the lives of whales and other actions they undertake to protect our Oceans. Congratulations from all of us on the great outcome of Operation Zero Tolerance!
