Blackspots' Unswooshers are a concept and product from Canadian anti-consumerist activists Adbusters. The idea behind this cool line of shoes has been to create a product that is unbranded and ethically made. They comply with vegan standards, and are being monitored by Robin Webb of Vegetarian Shoes in the UK. They are designed by John Fluevog, known for his innovative and art-inspired designs.
The shoes are made in Felgueiras, Portugal; a region steeped in 400 years of shoe-making tradition. The factory has been owned and operated by the same family for three generations, known for being excellent employers. The workers have up-to-date machinery at their disposal, their hours are appropriate and their wages are generous.
The Unswoosher is made from 100% organic hemp, which is processed with natural methods such as water retting, eliminating the need to use chemicals. The sole is made from recovered car tires.
Blackspots are set out with a mission to establish a worldwide consumer cooperative and to reassert consumer sovereignty over capitalism. Adbusters hopes this Blackspot venture is the beginning of a new era in ethical, worker-friendly, environmentally friendly production in the shoe industry.
